What is Arrhythmia?

You might feel like your heart skips a beat when you’re excited or in love, but if you find that your heart regularly flutters or skips, it could be a sign of cardiac arrhythmia. At the Integrative Cardiology Center of Long Island, our cardiologist in Roslyn specializes in providing holistic cardiac care to help patients achieve optimal wellness and longevity.

What is Arrhythmia?

The heart has a complex electrical system that delivers messages to the heart muscles and tells them to push blood throughout the body. This is known as a heartbeat. Most people’s hearts beat at a steady rate of 60 to 100 beats per minute. If there is an issue with your heart’s electrical system, the messages to the heart muscle aren’t delivered at the right time. This can cause arrhythmia. An arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, is when your heart beats too slow, too fast, or in an irregular rhythm. The most prevalent types of arrhythmia are:

  • Bradycardia – slow heartbeat.
  • Tachycardia – fast heartbeat.
  • Atrial Fibrillation – irregular heartbeat.

Certain types of arrhythmia are not necessarily severe and relatively common, but if the heart is not pumping effectively for extended periods, they become more of a concern. Several factors can contribute to an irregular heartbeat or rhythm. Ageing, medications, stimulants, being overweight, and damage to the heart are potential causes of arrhythmia. Our cardiologist in Roslyn will evaluate your heart and determine the cause of your arrhythmia.

Arrhythmia Triggers

If you are dealing with an irregular heartbeat problem that is episodic, you may find certain things trigger an arrhythmia. Some triggers could include:

  • Alcohol.
  • Lack of sleep.
  • Caffeine.
  • Nicotine.
  • Emotional or physical stress.

Our cardiologist in Roslyn can work out what triggers your arrhythmia and help you implement the necessary changes to avoid triggers where possible. Our team provides comprehensive functional cardiology to patients with any form of cardiovascular disease or cardiac risk factors.
